Richmond Hill church hall conversion

Construction 1991

Conversion of a heritage A-listed Gothic Revival church hall to a single residence.

The existing volume and vertical scale of the hall at the existing first floor level was retained for its historical and spatial character, undefiled by any additional floor levels.

The ground floor level was raised 600mm to provide an improved height relationship to the existing window sills and improve internal privacy from the street. Subdivision of spaces was achieved with repeated Gothic Revival styled timber and glazed panels allowing the single aspect daylight to penetrate into the interior.

A new basement (crypt) was dug out below ground floor level. The basement room provides a cosy retreat from the soaring space of the living areas above. The raised ground floor level allowed for the provision of narrow highlight windows to the basement to obtain borrowed light and ventilation.
