St Kilda church hall conversion
Construction 2013
Conversion of a heritage-listed church hall to a residence for a family of five with various studio spaces provided for the family members.
The main visible new building element comprises a 4-storey tower containing the bedrooms and bathrooms, located to the rear of the site to lessen the streetscape impact.
A new central courtyard inserted between the tower element and the front part of the hall building provides a separation of activity zones, allowing penetration of natural light and ventilation to the lower levels of the tower and displays the visual drama of the tower penetrating the church hall form.
A new basement contains a sound and film studio. Two visual art studios are also provided at a mezzanine level over the main living area, suspended from the hall roof structure to eliminate the requirement for support columns in the living area below.
